Stirchley Medical Practice

History of the practice

Below is a brief history of the practice. We would be interested to hear any stories you have about our history.

The old village of Stirchley began to expand in the early 1970s as a result of the plans for the then new town of Telford. The practice started in 1973, to serve all the new houses of the locality. Initially in 2 houses on Burford, Brookside, the new health centre opened on October 5 th 1975. At that time we had 3 doctors, 1 nurse and 6 receptionists to look after 5000 patients. The rest, as they say, is history!

Patient numbers have grown to the present 13,800, and staff to the present 10 doctors, 6 nurses, 3 health care assistants,12 receptionists & office staff, and attached district nurses, health visitors, and visiting clinicians.

The health centre initially belonged to Shropshire Health Authority, but was bought by the doctors & dentists in 1993 and then substantially expanded and rebuilt. In 2004 two more consulting rooms were added. A substantial extension was built in 2008 with the fianancial support of NHS Telford & Wrekin and Keele University giving four five more consulting rooms and a large educational facility.

Despite our size & the many changes in the health service, we remain true to the original principles of providing friendly up to date care by familiar staff to everyone who needs it.
